This is the first quilt that we created when we became Michael Miller Ambassadors. They sent us a stack of these amazing colors and we had to create something that used all of them (well, almost all of them, we left the browns and grays for other projects).
This quilt uses two of our favorite blocks, half-square triangles and flying geese. We are always amazed at how many different patterns you can come up with using simple triangles. The HST and flying geese also made it so that we could use more of those fun fabrics. It really lends to a scrappy look with all the different shades. Mixing the yellow/orange X’s throughout the other colors pulls them all together.

We love the look of a pattern on top of a pattern. It creates really interesting movement. This quilt looks so much harder than it actually is. That’s the other really cool thing about a pattern on top of a pattern, it’s easier than it looks and you still get that wow factor from the quilt.
FAQs:
- What is an HST?
- HST = Half Square Triangle. We love using HST’s in quilts. There are so many designs you can create by using simple triangles. And they are so easy to create with our new ruler. You can also easily resize your quilt just by making them larger or smaller.
- Do I have to have special tools to make this quilt?
- No, you can create any of our quilt patterns with very basic tools, especially Awestruck. Sewing machine and scissors are required of course. A cutting mat, 6x24” ruler and a rotary cutter are what I would consider basic quilting tools and make cutting quilt pieces easier. We would also recommend some type of fabric marker to help you mark the lines on the HST and Flying Geese blocks.
- How do I cut lots of pieces quickly?
- Layer your fabric and/or strips. You will want to make sure that the edges line up so that the sizes are not altered and don’t add so many layers that your rotary tool can’t get through them easily. If you have to push harder on your cutter, the fabric can shift on you as you cut it.
- How do I prevent wavy borders?
- Measure your quilt before adding the borders instead of sewing them on and trimming them. We have a tutorial on our You Tube channel that goes over how to measure your quilt for borders. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Fnb4SZ3L4&t=1s
- How do I wash my finished quilt?
- The first time you wash your quilt you’ll want to include a color catcher. This will gather any dye residue and keep it from bleeding into other parts of your quilt, this is a must when you have a quilt full of color with a white background. We prefer to wash our quilts in cold water on a gentle cycle and line dry, but you can tumble dry your quilts if you prefer. Just make sure that your color catcher did its job first. It’s easier to get color bleeds out before you dry it in a dryer.

Additional Color ways
We love to play with color and have provided you with a few different color ways to consider for this quilt. Since this quilt uses so many different colors, we provided some background change options for you to consider. Just switching the white and gray gives you a completely different look. We hope it helps inspire you to create your own version of our quilt.
