Construction Type: Foundation Paper Piecing

Recommended Sewing Level: Confident Beginner

Quilt Size(s): 44 x 58”

This is one of Kimie’s first foundation paper piecing designs.  At the time she had a little boy that was fascinated with snakes and there really weren’t any fun options out there for little boy quilts.  Luckily, for my sake, he has moved on from snakes, I don’t find them nearly as fascinating.  But I absolutely love all the other animals in this fun quilt.

The quilt is made up of 8 different animals in one of two sizes bringing lots of variety from the rainforest. Each animal is constructed using foundation paper piecing and are simple enough for the confident beginner.

The animal blocks also make really fun throw pillows or wall hangings to add additional décor to any child’s room.

FAQs:

  • How do you FPP?
    • There are multiple ways to foundation paper piece, and we suggest trying them all to determine which you prefer. Missy prefers to use the paper method, tearing the paper off afterwards is therapeutic to her.  If you don’t want to deal with that, there are other options to try like the freezer paper method.  Check out the tutorials that we offer on YouTube.  This one is specific to the sewing on paper method of FPP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf46lDzsdPg&t=642s
  • How do I make sure that my templates are the right size?
    • We include a 1” square on all of our templates. This way if you purchase a PDF version and need to print it out, you can ensure that it is the right size.  You’ll want to make sure that your printer doesn’t default to the fit to page setting that some do.  Print it at actual size and then double check that square.
  • What kind of thread should I use for FPP?
    • We don’t use special thread, just a basic sewing weight thread. We have tried using a thinner microquilter thread that we have seen others suggest, but we didn’t have success with it.  We had issues with it coming undone after we had completed the square and had to unpick and redo it.  So, we recommend sticking to your basic every day thread.
  • Do I need special paper for FPP?
    • There are specialty papers that you can purchase for FPP, but they aren’t required. We use basic cheap copy paper.  It tends to tear easily enough.  And we have found that if you add a little water either from a spray bottle or from Carolina’s new tools (you can see them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEhQUiSiGEg), the paper comes off even easier.

Color ways

We love to play with color and some quilts provide lots of options for various color options.  We matched the animals on this quilt with the colors that they are in the wild so we aren’t providing much in regards to color variation.  But you can really change up the look of this quilt with background and sashing colors.  Or match them to the favorite color of the quilt’s recipient.
