Online Quilting Bee Block 3
We are having so much fun hearing the responses from you and seeing all of your amazing quilt blocks!
If you missed block 2, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 2 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.
We are now ready to sew block 3! This month we are learning all about flying geese blocks. This block features a star constructed of flying geese, inside a larger matching star. We will use our favorite method of flying geese, No Waste 4 at a time. If you would like more information on how to customize your flying geese units and make them in different sizes, visit our full tutorial:
Using this method, the flying geese will come out the exact size you need, no trimming necessary. If you are using light and dark fabrics, you may want to trim off the dog ears to keep them from showing through the fabric.
If you are looking for a good use of scraps, this block is the perfect solution. Make each star a different color, or mix them up. It really is such a versatile block, perfect for young and old alike. Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be about 64×84″.
Fabric Requirements:
There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Finished quilt : 64×84″

Flying Geese Construction
Place 2 gray squares on top of one 5 3/4″ white square, across from each other diagonally, lining up the corners. Draw a line from corner to corner. Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the line. Press the gray triangles up.
Place another gray square on the final corner of one section. Draw a line from corner to corner. Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the line. Press. Repeat with final gray square and other white/gray section for 4 gray/white flying geese units.
Repeat with the white 10 1/4″ square and 5 3/8″ dark green and light green square, placing matching squares across from each other in step one. You will have 4 dk green/white/lt green flying geese units.
Inside Star Construction
Note: Press each seam before moving onto the next step. We pressed the seams towards the solid square to minimize bulk and make it possible to next the seams, helping them line up easier.
Top Strip: Sew 1 – 2 3/4″ white square next to one gray/white flying geese unit, followed by 1 – 2 3/4″ white square. Repeat for Bottom Strip.
Center Strip: Sew one gray/white flying geese unit next to the 5″ yellow square, followed by a gray/white flying geese unit.
Sew top strip to top of center strip, and sew bottom strip to bottom of center strip.
