How it Came to Be:
Summer is definitely our favorite season. It has everything we love, sunshine, playing outside, working in the garden, kayaking, hiking. And did I mention warmth? We are most definitely warm weather people and even in southern Utah’s mild winter weather, Kimie and I both complain and count down to summer. And you can’t have summer without lemonade.
Summer and lemonade just go together, which is a little funny since lemons are ripe in the winter. Citrus is one of those funny fruits, starts to ripen in the winter and you get fruit and flowers at the same time. And the flowers smell amazing.
When I first designed this quilt, it didn’t have the additional sashing in between the blocks and contained additional lemon sections. Then we removed the lines in our quilting program and the whole thing just kinda disappeared. It was one of those designs that looked great with the black outlines around everything so it would be a perfect coloring image, but didn’t translate into quilt squares that had definition. Kimie pulled the different aspects in to large blocks and added the sashing. This is one of those quilts that really came alive with the collaboration that we share.
While I love regular lemonade, anything that can be pink as well is going to be my choice. I love pink, to the point that I painted my exterior doors pink and am now known as the pink door house. So adding pink into our lemons was a given.
Because of the size of the blocks, you can really make this quilt as big or as little as you would like. By adding or subtracting blocks, it can become any size you want. With a small border added, they are also the perfect size for placemats. Sew just one row together for a matching table runner.
